5 Natural Ways to Protect Your Skin in the Sun

We are now in the depths of summer, and we hope that you have had your fair share of time in the sun. The sun only makes an appearance a few months a year for many of us, so now's the time to enjoy it! Unfortunately, sometimes the summer can distract us from how harsh the sun can be on our skin. The last thing we want to do is cause irreparable damage - or have to sport a painful sunburn!

If you are looking for the best and natural ways to protect your skin from too much sunlight, you came to the right place. We made a quick list of what you can do RIGHT NOW to give your skin the sun protection it needs outside.

Drink more water

This one is self-explanatory, but we get that many people can sometimes forget to drink their water, especially when the beverage choices for summer hangouts are anything but water. Regardless of how many drinks you bring on your trip, the skin only benefits from drinking water, and so it's only natural to give it as much water as it needs, especially on the hottest days.

It doesn't have to be gallons; just drink an extra two or three glasses on top of what you're already drinking, more if you're on the beach or doing any physically demanding activity outside in the sun.

Water keeps the skin hydrated, keeps it healthy, and lowers its chances of developing wrinkles after prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Use natural sunscreen

Using sunscreen is essential for everyone in the summer, but some products may have ingredients that can harm the skin in the long run. Luckily, there are many safer options; you just have to look at the label. Look for a sunscreen that is certified natural and safe for skin health.

Alternatively, you may try to make your own natural sunscreen using common ingredients such as sunflower, coconut oil, or even aloe vera extracts.

Take skin supplements

When we take supplements, it is usually to fill in nutritional gaps, help us lose weight, or improve our overall quality of life. However, some supplements can boost skin health, especially when it comes to skin hydration and some skin rejuvenating properties. These products attribute their effectiveness to the use of powerful antioxidants.

Antioxidants help protect the body against free radicals and UV rays, the leading creators of free radicals in our skin cells. UV rays damage our skin by "stealing" energy from healthy cells, which then causes oxidative stress. This is terrible news for our skin since oxidative stress can activate enzymes that trigger processes that can lead to cell damage and collagen breakdown, two things that can lead to premature skin aging.

For the best skin health, we recommend Oligonol and Astaxanthin-SR.

  • Oligonol, made from green tea and lychee extract and can help the skin through its antioxidant properties. *
  • Astaxanthin-SR is a product designed specifically for your antioxidant and healthy aging needs, which can improve symptoms of skin aging.

Wear a big hat

Sometimes, all you need is a big hat that covers your face and neck. A dark hat can offer better UV protection. Also, think about your attire.

While summer can mean going sleeveless or wearing "short-shorts," our skin will prefer it if we at least wear something loose or thin but covers most of our arms and legs. You don't have to wear them the whole day, just when the sun is at its peak.

Take a break under some trees

Mother Nature can provide the best shade. When choosing a spot to spend time outside, make sure it is near some trees. This way, you can take 'sun breaks' when needed.

Takeaway...

Summer is synonymous with a lot of fun out in the sun, but it does come with some health risks, especially when it comes to skin health.

Fortunately, there are many ways to protect the skin from sun damage naturally. All you have to do is drink lots of water, apply sunscreen diligently, choose high-quality skin supplements, wear a big hat, and take 'sun breaks' wisely.

If you follow our tips, your skin will love you and remain healthy and beautiful throughout the summer and after.
