Take Immunity Seriously...

Immune system. Everyone has one, but do you really know why it is essential?

Your immune system is a complex force that keeps you alive.

  • Its primary function is to prevent or limit infection. Your immune system is comprised of white blood cells called leukocytes that reside in the thymus, spleen, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. These cells look for threats from microorganisms like viruses, bacteria, toxins, and parasites. When a threat is found, innate immunity – starting with skin and mucous membranes – mount an immediate response.
  • Vaccines, exposure to illnesses, and the environment trigger the adaptive immune response. Adaptive immunity is acquired and strengthened by the presence of antibodies in the immune system. Antibodies form in response to illnesses, vaccinations, and factors like smoke and smog as we progress from childhood into adulthood. That is why we don’t get ill as quickly as children do and we recover more quickly when the body recognizes the pathogen.
  • Stress and sleep deprivation can adversely impact immunity. Unchecked chronic stress produces cortisol hormones that suppress the body’s immune response. This can lead to increased risk of colds, serious illness, allergies, gastrointestinal problems and autoimmune disease. Poor sleep impacts the body’s circadian rhythm and similarly disrupts the immune system.
  • Positive emotions and a healthy lifestyle boost immunity. Studies show expressed emotions like awe, joy, and wonder have a direct correlation with more robust levels of cytokines. Cytokines are molecules that work within cells to regulate and affect immune system response.
  • The immune system can be compromised. When the immune system malfunctions, immunodeficiency due to age, obesity, malnutrition or inherited disease can occur. In autoimmune conditions, the immune system erroneously attacks healthy cells.
  • Being too clean can be harmful to the immune system. Not all bacteria are bad. Good bacteria provide nutrients and defense against infection. When people become overzealous in keeping their living environments germ-free, the lack of pathogens may actually reduce the immune system’s effectiveness.

Now that we understand immunity and its importance to well being, is there a way to amp up your body’s natural response to fight that under-the-weather feeling?
