Let’s Talk Toothpaste!

|

When you brush your teeth two times a day (or more in some cases) you think you are taking the appropriate steps towards protecting your health. In reality – if you are not using the right toothpaste you could be harming your body.

Toothpaste contains many potentially harmful ingredients – some that could lead to serious long-term health problems. Take a look at most major toothpaste brands – you might be shocked to learn that their products contain high levels of sugar and an array of harmful chemicals. For example, sodium saccharine is 300 times sweeter than sugar and is a known carcinogen – yet it is commonly used to give toothpaste its flavor.

Many consumers purchase toothpaste and other hygiene products without even thinking to read the list of ingredients. We would like to highlight the harmful ingredients that you should keep an eye out for when shopping for toothpaste.

Some of the chemicals you should be looking out for when shopping for toothpaste are:

  1. Triclosan – is an antibacterial and antifungal agent that is found in many consumer goods such as soaps, detergents, surgical cleaning treatments, and toothpaste. When you use a product containing Triclosan, you can absorb a small amount through your skin or mouth. Research has shown that Tricolsan can be harmful to the immune system and has shown to alter hormone regulation in animals.
  2. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – is a foaming agent that is found in many personal care products, including toothpaste. SLS is categorized as a hazard and has been linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, organ toxicity, skin irritation and endocrine disruption.
  3. Propylene Glycol – is a mineral oil that is also used in antifreeze and airplane de-icers. It is found in many types of toothpaste and is known to irritate the eyes, skin and lungs. Along with causing organ system toxicity.

At QOL we don’t think these chemicals have any place in your toothpaste. That is why we would like to tell you about Perfect Smile® all-natural dental hygiene products!
