How Long Should One Take AHCC®?

|
Nutritional Supplement from Quality Shiitake Mushrooms

As nutritional supplements continue to grow in popularity in our world, so does the usage of AHCC®. But, as is with the consideration of taking any kind of new dietary supplement, one should always ask: how long should one take AHCC®?

Dietary supplements such as AHCC® are manufactured products meant to supplement human nutritional needs and are taken by mouth by pill, capsule, tablet, or liquid. They provide nutrients that either come from natural sources or have been synthetically produced, to quantitatively increase their consumption for a variety of reasons.

Medical literature documents AHCC® as an agent that can help support the immune system.* In this context, manufacturer dosing guidelines typically recommend that two 500 mg capsules be taken orally 2 to 3 times a day, to help promote general well-being.

Typically, AHCC® does not lose its effectiveness over time, even at the same dosage.* An AHCC® placebo-controlled study showed that patients who used AHCC® regularly over a 10-year period had consistent and significant improvement associated with AHCC® consumption in comparison to the placebo group that did not take AHCC®.*

However, it is always best to understand more information about AHCC®, so you can consult a medical professional to help make the best decision for you.

What Exactly is AHCC®?

AHCC® is a nutritional supplement, which is created from a unique extract of cultured Lentinula edodes, or shiitake mushrooms.

The production of AHCC® begins with the cultivation of quality shiitake mushrooms by mushroom farmers. In this delicate process, only top-quality wooden logs are selected to host the growth of shiitake mushrooms. These wooden logs are then drilled and filled with the spawn of shiitake mushrooms, and a variety of other growth-promoting nutrients. After growing for a few weeks, they are then harvested.

AHCC® is manufactured by Amino Up Chemical Co Ltd. in Sapporo, Japan, at their singular factory location. It is the only place in the world where AHCC® is manufactured.

The production of AHCC® is a very interesting, multi-step process. The process was researched and developed at the University of Tokyo Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences by Dr. Toshihiko Okamoto, as he worked together with a team of researchers from Amino Up Chemical Co Ltd. in 1989.

The multi-step process is very precise, and consists of many steps:

  1. Shiitake mushrooms are brought to the factory, harvested from local farmers.
  2. A variety of Basidiomycota phylum fungi hybrids are also selected to be combined with the shiitake mushrooms.
  3. The mycelia of the shiitake mushrooms (the hair-like root structures typically located below the ground in the wild) are cultured in a rich rice bran extract, which contain further immune system enhancing qualities.*
  4. After a colony forms, it is cultured for an additional 7 - 9 weeks.
  5. After the growth period, the colony goes through an additional complex patented process that prepares it for consumption, which includes cultivation, enzyme decomposition, sterilization, concentration, and freeze-drying into powdered form, which is then encapsulated for consumption

This entire process is carefully computer-monitored, ensuring the production of pure high-quality AHCC®.

AHCC® is sold across the world and has been praised for its ability to help support the immune system in addition to general well-being and health.* It is very popular in the Asian market and has only recently begun to break through into the western world’s industry of alternative medicine.

How Does AHCC® Help Support the Immune System?

AHCC® can help support the general health of our complex immune system when taken consistently at the proper daily dosage.*

Your immune system is quite complex, but there are a few essential things to know about it:

  • There are 2 different types of immunity: innate and adaptive
  • Your innate immunity launches immediate, non-specific attacks against threats and microscopic foreign invaders
    • Innate immunity includes 4 important parts: Cytokines, Natural Killer (NK) Cells, Macrophages, and Dendritic Cells
  • Your adaptive immunity is slower-acting and longer to respond but can produce specific responses meant to combat a particular microscopic foreign invader in the body
    • Adaptive immunity is composed of T cells and B cells

AHCC® has been studied by various institutions, and results have supported the beliefs that AHCC®:

  • Increases the production of cytokines*
  • Increases the populations of macrophages by as much as 200%*
  • Increases the activity of NK cells by as much as 300% - 800%*
  • Increases the number of T cells by as much as 200%*
  • Increases the number of dendritic cells*

Who Else Takes AHCC®?

AHCC® is a very popular nutritional supplement in both China and Japan, and is available to the general public at most nutritional supplement retailers in both countries. Many people take it to help maintain their general well-being, and specifically, to support their immune systems.

Recently, AHCC® has seen a positive trend in the western hemisphere--especially in the United States. Western consumers are continuing to discover ways to help maintain their general health and well-being, and AHCC® is one of the nutritional supplements that continue to breakthrough in the western market.

What Else Do I Need to Know Before Taking AHCC®?

Some people with mushroom allergies are unsure of whether or not they can safely take AHCC®.

Mushroom allergies are typically a result of exposure to mushroom spores. These spores originate in the “fruiting body,” or top, of the mushroom.

AHCC® is produced from the mycelia, or root of the mushroom, which does not contain any spores that typically cause mushroom allergies.

In addition, the manufacturing process of AHCC® breaks down shiitake mushrooms in a complex fermentation process, producing low molecular weight compounds--which further lowers most allergy risks.

Most people who believe they have mushroom allergies have no issues taking AHCC® successfully. If you need additional reassurance, you may contact a healthcare professional--specifically, one that specializes in natural products. You may also take AHCC® very slowly by taking a quarter of the vegicap on the tip of your tongue and waiting to see if you experience itching or any other sign of allergy before regularly taking AHCC® as part of your health and wellness regimen.

AHCC® can typically be taken without any medicinal conflicts or interactions. AHCC® is metabolized via enzyme pathway “P450 2D6,” which means that AHCC® can potentially interact with and affect the absorption of any other drug or medicine that uses that same pathway.

If you are concerned about possible interactions between AHCC® and your medication, you should contact a doctor or medical professional to determine whether or not you can safely take AHCC®.

See If AHCC® Is Right For You!

Many people are looking to give their immune system the extra support that it deserves, and AHCC® is an excellent option in that regard.* For many, it is hard to get enough health-promoting ingredients from their diets alone, especially in a world of fast food and artificial ingredients as a tradeoff to convenience.

As with any new dietary supplement, it is highly important to discuss any new additions to your diet with a health professional, such as your doctor. This can help ensure that you are taking AHCC® with only your best health in mind.
