Celebrate National Drinking Straw Day!

Today is National Drinking Straw Day! This day commemorates the date in 1888 that Marvin C. Stone received the patent for the first drinking straw. 

We think this holiday is a great time to join the global movement to eliminate plastic drinking straws from our landfills, streams, oceans, and beaches. 

You may be wondering why this is important, well 

Five hundred million straws are used and discarded every day in the United States alone. Accumulating to 175 Billion straws per year, filtering into landfills and littering our waterways and oceans. 

Try these fun alternatives to plastic straws! 

  1. Reusable metal straws 
  2. Hay straws
  3. Paper straws 
  4. Compostable straws 
  5. Bamboo straws 
  6. Pa-straws (straws made from pasta!)

While you're investing in some of these straw alternatives, we thought it would be helpful if we shared with you some ways to use straws more throughout your day! 

One great way, drink your breakfast! By drinking your breakfast, you flood the body with high-density nutrition that will promote the rebuilding, regenerating, and cleansing processes of the body without taxing the digestive system. Unlike eating your breakfast, drinking a nutrient-rich liquid upon rising requires minimal digestion, which allows these vital nutrients to be put to work right away. 

Our suggestion? 

A superfood smoothie packed with green leafy vegetables, seasonal low-sugar fruits, healthy fats such as avocado, hemp/chia seeds, and a clean source of organic protein powder.

  • 1 cup loosely packed spinach chopped, or kale leaves
  • ½ ripe avocado
  • ½ cup almond milk
