Summer Is All About Self Love!
Summer is usually synonymous to bikini body season for many people, especially women. While the idea of better habits for health and nutrition is wonderful, this time of year always seems to reinforce and intensify the horrible messages we get about our bodies. As a result, the months counting down to summer means that gyms around the country experience an onslaught of new clients sign-ups with the goal of achieving society's ideal bikini body. Â
The Body Positive movement began in 1996, promoting a social environment where healthy eating and a positive body image would be the norm for all people. It's helped us address toxic messages about bikini bodies and messed-up ideals of perfection that have been lurking in our cultural conversation for decades. It's been the catalyst to change the narrativeâand push brands around the world to keep up.
However, while body positivity sounds like such a nice idea, itâs not always attainable by simply changing habits. âBody positivity can feel like pressure,â says Claire Mysko, CEO of the National Eating Disorder Association. âThe reality is that we live in a culture that makes it pretty tough to feel positive about our bodies every day.â Itâs a worthy goal to work toward, but when we start blaming ourselves for not loving every single thing about our bodies all the time, it can make us feel even worse. âThatâs when âbody positivityâ can be a problematic term,â Mysko says. It can create one more way for you to feel bad about yourself.
So, rather than preach body positivity, letâs start making a shift toward working on body acceptance now that the summer is at its end. âAcceptance is about making peace with our bodies,â Mysko says. âItâs about striving to treat our bodies with respectâwherever we are on that journey.â In other words, you donât have to feel positive about all aspects of your body all the time. We all have days when we look in the mirror and just arenât feeling it. Thatâs OK. Thatâs normal. That does not make you a failure.
The key to body acceptance is, rather than demonize your jiggly belly or cellulite-sprinkled thighs, to work toward accepting them. You donât have to want to post them on social media to prove that you love yourself. Your body hang-ups also donât have to be âwrongâ or âbadââtheyâre simply a part of the way youâre built.
Itâs been found that the first step in making body acceptance a reality is shifting your focus from how your body looks to what your body can do. With that thought, here are 12 ways to love your body:
- Become aware of what your body can do each day. Remember it is the instrument of your life, not just an ornament.
- Create a list of people you admire: people who have contributed to your life, your community, or the world. Consider whether their appearance was important to their success and accomplishments.
- Donât let your weight or shape keep you from activities that you enjoy.
- Wear comfortable clothes that you like and that feel good to your body.
- Think about all the things you could accomplish with the time and energy you currently spend worrying about your body and appearance. Try one!
- Consider this: your skin replaces itself once a month, your stomach lining every five days, your liver every six weeks, and your skeleton every three months.
- Every morning when you wake up, thank your body for resting and rejuvenating itself so you can enjoy the day.
- Every evening when you go to bed, tell your body how much you appreciate what it has allowed you to do throughout the day.
- Find a method of exercise that you enjoy and do it regularly. Donât exercise to lose weight or to fight your body. Do it to make your body healthy and strong and because it makes you feel good.
- Think back to a time in your life when you felt good about your body. Tell yourself you can feel like that again, even in this body at this age.
- Keep a list of 10 positive things about yourself--without mentioning your appearance. Add to it!
- Eat when you are hungry. Rest when you are tired. Surround yourself with people that remind you of your inner strength and beauty.
Your body loves you! Now it's your turn to love your body back!Â
