Krill Oil; Antarctica's Secret Weapon

If the Roman god of the sea, Neptune, could give us the secret to a healthier body and mind, he would probably steer us to the tiny crustaceans known as krill. About the size of a paper clip, krill are an essential part of every marine ecosystem and can be found in all the world’s oceans. However, no other krill on earth are as prized as Antarctic krill. The keystone species of the Antarctic Ocean, krill are the main food source for whales, seals, squid, penguins, birds and more. Krill are also the largest biomass on earth; when grouped together, they can be seen from space!

So what makes krill so attractive to the health industry? Antarctic krill are nutrient powerhouses that feed on omega-3-rich phytoplankton and zooplankton. From krill, oil is extracted through a unique, multi-stage process that preserves its nutritional value while maintaining superior freshness. This forms the basis of Neptune Krill Oil (NKO®), a revolutionary supplement produced from 100% pure Antarctic krill.

So what makes our Neptune Krill Oil so great? Read on to find out!

It’s an excellent source of EPA and DHA

Because krill feed on omega-3-rich phytoplankton, krill oil is a concentrated source of the essential omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These “good for you” fats are vital to brain and heart health, and hundreds of studies suggest EPA and DHA provide benefits to a wide range of health challenges.*

It has better bioavailability than fish oil

Unlike fish oil, krill oil contains EPA and DHA bonded to phospholipids – not triglycerides — giving it significantly greater bioavailability. This means that the omega- 3s are more easily absorbed and utilized than those from fish oil. One way to test the bioavailability of marine oils is the Omega-3 Index, which measures red blood cell levels of EPA and DHA. The krill oil used in Neptune Krill Oil is a specially extracted variety that has been demonstrated through a double-blind, placebo-controlled human study to increase the Omega-3 Index twice as much as fish oil in just four weeks.*

It has stronger astaxanthin activity

Simply put, astaxanthin is the bright red pigment and super-antioxidant that gives salmon and krill their signature reddish color. Research has shown that astaxanthin protects against oxidative stress in humans and improves blood flow.* Our Neptune Krill Oil supplement features the clinically researched amount of 2 mg of astaxanthin per 2-softgel serving.

It’s sustainable

While krill are the most abundant species on earth, there is still widespread concern that they are at risk from industrial fishing. After all, humpback whales depend on krill to survive as the migrate up north to feed. However, our product is sustainably harvested and supplied only from vessels and facilities monitored by members of The Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, the official international organization that regulates fishing in the Antarctic Ocean. Compared with fish oil, krill oil is far more sustainable due to the vast quantities of krill that live in the icy waters of the Antarctic.

While research on krill oil remains ongoing, early studies of Neptune Krill Oil (NKO®) have demonstrated that it maintains blood lipids already within normal range, supports joint flexibility and function, and alleviates PMS symptoms. * So go ahead and krill out, man!
